This is a piece inspired by the artwork of Hanien Conradie, titled Flowers and Desire I. It is of a critically endangered flower, called the Worcester Silky Puff. It is being cultivated in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town. This art work is the imagined experience of the flower. While I was inspired by the lines, and rising and falling spots above the flower, it also reminded me of a Japanese ghost story, as I started to see the image of a woman in the flower. The ghost story is of the spirit of a woman, who is trapped in a Hydrangea bush, and because she is missing her lover, she is crying, and her tears are washing out the colour of the flowers. A spirit guide comes to reunite the ghost with her lover. My piece develops along that story line.
